| Head-trip: Reviewing Argentinean Short “The Head”
If you were either too young - or simply not rebellious enough - to take part in the drug-happy hippy era,
the hand drawn animated Argentinean short “The Head” gives you a good idea of what it might have felt like.
Composed by artists Matias Vigliano and Dante Zaballa, the short piece centers on a bionic character
carrying a cranium with an irresistible appetite. Against a crazy multicoloured background,
it chugs around in a frenzy while consuming everything in its path. If you think the concept is
unconventional, have a look at the video:
In “The Head”, Zaballa and Gandolfo combine the look and sound of the Disney
black-and-white shorts of old with some serious hand-drawn psychedelica. The use
of shades of black and charcoal give the piece that classic (read: timeless)
look. Bright and dark water paint-like colors, splashed throughout give the
piece a feel that’s both disorienting and exciting. What brought them both
together is the constant pulsing and churning of each scene, sending your senses
into a spatial spasm. It’s a piece that’s so unorthodox, you’ll have to watch it
more than once.
My only knock, if you can call it that, would that the piece be
developed more, perhaps into a quick story or more interaction among the odd
characters. That aside, “The Head is the drippiest 2 minutes and 17 seconds
you’ll spend. Drugs not required.
